Journal: Week five...

And I like to chew your toes!

The puppies continue to grow and grow. They were about to escape from the whelping box, so they now live in the "puppy pen" in the living room where the whelping box used to be. They think mommy Tulia is a great jungle gym. Mommy does not think that is as much fun as their little claws and little teeth are sharp. She is spending less and less time in the puppy pen. She is willing to let the other dogs now kiss the puppies through or over the fence, although she does not want them around when she is feeding them.

At the end of the week we began mixing in a little puppy food with their weaning food. They think that solid food is the "cat's meow" - or rather, the "puppies boof." They are actually beginning to bark little tiny barks (except for Aoife and Nuala who have big little barks).

A new game they play with the human beans is "puppy pile." When we sit in the puppy box all the puppies come over and pile on our laps - except for those biting our toes! With their increasing size and increasing activity level come increasing escapes from the pen. One night while Deborah was sleeping next to the pen she was woken by a puppy bite on her toe. She said it was an "interesting" way to wake up!

The puppies now run and are beginning to jump (both up to be held and on each other). Sometimes the puppy pen sounds like a major dogfight - in miniature.
